Marotichal is a small community in the Turrialba highlands of Costa Rica's Cartago province, situated within a cloud forest zone at elevations where clouds don't pass over - they sit in the trees.
Cloud forests are a specific type of tropical montane forest defined by persistent low-level cloud cover that saturates the vegetation. The clouds don't just provide rain - the trees themselves intercept fog droplets directly on their leaves and bark, a process called horizontal precipitation or fog drip, which can deliver more water to the forest floor than rainfall alone.
The result is an ecosystem of extraordinary humidity and biological density:
- Epiphytes - mosses, ferns, orchids, and bromeliads - coat every surface of every tree, sometimes accounting for more biomass than the trees they grow on
- Amphibians thrive because the constant moisture eliminates the need for proximity to standing water; many species never need to visit a pond or stream
- The quetzal - considered one of the most beautiful birds in the Americas and a symbol of Maya and Aztec culture - lives in cloud forests in this region
- Many cloud forest species are micro-endemic: found only within a few kilometres of their home altitude band, making them uniquely vulnerable to climate change as their habitable elevation zone narrows
Cloud forests cover less than 1% of global forest area but harbour a disproportionate share of global biodiversity. As temperatures rise, the cloud base lifts, and the zone where clouds rest in the canopy moves higher - in many places, off the mountain entirely.
