TWIL #027 - Shrink-Wrapping: Why Old Dinosaur Art Was So Wrong

Early science illustrators drew dinosaurs by stretching skin directly over bone, skipping muscle entirely. The technique has a name, and it quietly shaped how a generation imagined prehistoric life.

If you draw a modern elephant the way early palaeontologists drew dinosaurs - skin pulled tightly over its skeleton with no muscle, fat, or soft tissue - you get something unrecognisable. The trunk becomes a bony tube. The face becomes a skull with a membrane. The animal looks like a monster.

This technique is called shrink-wrapping, and it's one of the main reasons early dinosaur reconstructions look so gaunt, spiky, and alien compared to modern ones.

The problem is a combination of limited evidence and reasonable-seeming assumptions. Fossilised bones survive. Soft tissue almost never does. So illustrators, working with what they had, drew skin as a surface that followed the contours of the skeleton directly - essentially shrink-wrapping the hide over the frame.

In reality, living animals carry significant muscle mass, fat deposits, and soft tissue structures that substantially change their silhouette. A skeleton gives you the rough architecture; it tells you almost nothing about the outer shape. Modern elephants, for example, look nothing like their skeletons suggest from the outside.

The field of dinosaur reconstruction has improved dramatically, partly through better fossil preservation (some specimens include skin impressions and even traces of soft tissue), and partly through comparison with living birds and reptiles - the closest living relatives of non-avian dinosaurs. We now know many dinosaurs had feathers, elaborate crests, and body shapes much more rounded and muscled than the skeletal silhouette implies.

The lesson carries beyond palaeontology: what's absent from the evidence can matter as much as what's present.
