TWIL #037 - Whales Used to Walk

The evolutionary history of whales is one of the most complete and well-documented transitions in the fossil record - from small four-legged land mammals back into the sea over about 15 million years.

The whale's evolutionary history is one of palaeontology's great success stories - a transition documented in extraordinary fossil detail, showing step by step how a land mammal returned to the sea.

The ancestral group is the Pakicetids: small, deer-like hoofed mammals that lived about 53 million years ago in what is now Pakistan and India. They were not aquatic but are identified as whale ancestors through distinctive features of the inner ear bone structure - a shape unique to cetaceans and found in no other mammal.

The fossil sequence from there is unusually complete:

  • Ambulocetus (~49 mya) - a large, amphibious creature that could walk on land and swim using undulating body movements, like an otter
  • Rodhocetus (~46 mya) - more aquatic, with reduced hind limbs, large feet for paddling, and a skeleton adapted for swimming
  • Basilosaurus (~40 mya) - fully aquatic, elongated body, tiny vestigial hind limbs still present but no longer functional
  • Dorudon - fully whale-shaped, hind limbs reduced to internal pelvic remnants

Modern whales and dolphins still carry vestigial pelvic bones inside their bodies - evolutionary remnants of the hind limbs their ancestors walked on. In rare cases, individual whales are born with small external hind limb protrusions.

The entire transition took approximately 15 million years. The fossil record for this lineage is among the most detailed evolutionary sequences ever assembled.
